The Fifth “Gerontech and Innovation Expo Cum Summit”

4-Day Expo at HKCEC (Free Admission)
【Press release on 3 November 2021】The fifth Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES), co-hosted by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, and co-organised by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), showcases innovative technology products and solutions, provides a collaborative platform for all stakeholders which jointly foster the improvement of policies and the development of Hong Kong society, and responds to the challenges and opportunities brought about by the ageing population. The exhibition is held from 3-6 November 2021 at Hall 1A-C of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and is open to the public for free.
More than 160 exhibitors showcase over 600 gerontech products and solutions. Some of the exhibits made their debut in Hong Kong this year. This year’s Expo covers 9,400-square-metre exhibition floors with four themed pavilions, which are “Fall Prevention and Detection”, “Interactive Sports Ground”, “Care Food Market”, and “Smart City Quality Service”.
In addition, A series of highlighted events will be staged at the Expo, such as Gerontech Cleaning and Maintenance Service Centre Opening Ceremony, Tech-enhanced Sports Day for People with Disabilities & Care Food Cooking Competition 2021 Prize Presentation Ceremony.
Mr Bernard CHAN, Chairperson of HKCSS, said, “Today, GIES is not only a public education event but an outstanding example of successful cross-sector collaboration to tackle population ageing and disabilities. More and more partners from different sectors of society are engaged to work on the same mission. It helps in advancing our vision for gerontechnology in Hong Kong.”
Dr LAW Chi-kwong, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, who officiated at the GIES expo opening, said, “The rapidly ageing population presents a great challenge to the community as a whole, in particular, the medical system and the provision of elderly care services. How to improve the quality of life and self-care ability of the elderly through the application of innovative technology has become an issue high on our agenda. I believe gerontechnology is one of the key ways to deal with these challenges effectively.”
At the Summit from the 2-4 November, nearly 40 speakers from Hong Kong and worldwide such as Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Japan, Singapore, The United Kingdom, and The United States are present to exchange their views online. Among them, Dr Majd Alwan, Senior Vice President of Technology & Business Strategy of LeadingAge Inc. from the US, and Mr Jakob Skaarup Nielsen, CEO of Healthcare DENMARK, made the keynote speech of the Summit respectively titled “Supporting Aged Care Providers to Adopt and Embrace Technology” and “Danish Experience of Using Technology in the Elderly and Rehabilitation Care”.
Mr Alfred SIT Wing-hang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, who officiated at the GIES Summit opening yesterday, said, “the GIES is a treasured platform for exchanging information and experience, and more importantly, getting inspired by experts from different parts of the world. For the gerontechnology ecosystem as a whole, it is an institutional enabler for capacity building and cross-sector collaboration.”
